This year, a total of 816 Korean short films competed for the ‘Korean Fantastic: Shorts’ awards, which is a section that was established last year. Three primary jury members including Director KIM Taehee, movie critic KIM Hyungseok, and SON Kwangsoo - the programmer for the International Extreme-Short Image & Film Festival - thoroughly examined all movies submitted and came up with eight finalists for the competition after a long debate. The films that the jury focused on portrayed diverse societal problems and expressed the raw reality of the heartless world. These films did so while delivering a diverse theatrical style and communicating with the audience. Eight films are featured in this section, including: The Offender, a film that deals with the violence and self-reflection in social settings like the military and human relationships; Squid, a silly and ingenious approach in depicting a broken family and a father in crisis; A Transfer Student, a horror story set in a school which contains every element of such a school series; Perfect Marathon, a truthful confession from youngsters looking at their past loves as well as their current lives; Down Fall, a film looking at present suffering through the lens of the prophecy of a dystopic future; and the animated film The Café. Two other films titled Weight of the Hand and Vibration are also films in this section. Films encompassing many styles and genres ranging from social drama, horror, comedy, sci-fi, and animation, are waiting for the audiences at BIFAN this year.
